Asen dynasty

The house Asen ( Bulgarian Асен ) was a Bulgarian family rule. Their relatives were also called Assen, Asseniden, Aseniter, Aseniden and in Byzantium Asanes ( Ασάνης ).

Origin

The origin of the dynasty Asen is controversial. It is both a Wallachian and a kumanischer origin suspected. In documents Tsar Kaloyan's a continuity to the rulers of the First Bulgarian Empire is established.

In the Middle Ages the fortress Lovech seat of Boljaren Asen, the founder of the dynasty. 1185/1186 she was among his sons Ivan Asen I and Peter IV Theodor Asen center of an uprising, which extended in the area between the Danube and the Balkan mountains and was directed against the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos. Your success culminated in the 1187, signed in Lovech peace treaty with Byzantium, thus the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire " de jure " was sealed. As a new capital city was chosen Tarnowgrad. Under the dynasty Aesir succeeded the second Bulgarian kingdom again to reach new heights. It dominated the Balkans again, not only militarily but also culturally.

Outstanding rulers were in the founding generation Kaloyan, who in 1204 won the support of the Pope for a Tsar coronation and for an independent church organization under the Bulgarian Patriarch, and his nephew Ivan Asen II ( 1218-1241 ) of the usurpation of his uncle Boril ( 1204-1218 ) finished. A clever marriage policy brought the Aseniden in kinship relations with the Hungarian, Serbian and Epirus ruling house, as well as to the Laiteinern Opel in Constantinople and to the Greeks in Nicaea. The Aseniden died with Kaliman Asen II from (1256-1257) in the direct male line.
