Avro 508

The Avro 508 it was the project of a two-seat biplane reconnaissance aircraft of the British manufacturer Avro.

History

In the hope of a contract for a series production is constructed at Avro in 1914 a pressurized airplane propeller, designed as a reconnaissance aircraft with a cockpit for the observer in the nose of the aircraft and the space for the pilots in the wings.

However, since after the first visits of the aircraft from the Royal Air Force was no interest in the 508, it was the construction of a single prototype, which was presented only twice in public. For the first time, the undisguised cell was shown in January 1914 at an exhibition in Manchester; the aircraft is completely assembled was presented at the Olympia Aero Show in London in March of the same year.

End of April 1915 the first flight at Brooklands. Because of the lack of job the machine was delivered shortly thereafter at a flight school in Hendon. However, she was there not long in use. According to witnesses, she was dismantled in April 1916, and parked without an engine. Supposedly, the 508 should be equipped as a training machine with a dual control. Whether she's ever flown in this configuration, is doubtful.

Construction

The Avro 508 was a dreistieliger biplane. The fuselage consisted of a wood frame structure that was covered only in the bow with fabric. The top and bottom of equal length wings consisted of a wooden structure covered with fabric. All four areas were equipped with ailerons.
