Aydıncık, Mersin

Aydıncık ( in ancient Kelenderis called ) is the name of a district town and a district in the Turkish province of Mersin. The district is located in the south of the province. The city itself is located on the Mediterranean Sea on the European road 90 Aydıncık has 9,050 and the county 11,885 inhabitants ( 2010). In addition to the city Aydıncık there are four more municipalities and 10 villages.

Until 1965 Aydıncık was still called Gilindire what is the Turkish form of the word Kelenderis. The city has a long history and was home to many different peoples. From the 10th century it came under the rule of the Turks. Until the 1920 population exchange between Greece and Turkey lived here with Christian Greeks nor Turks, called on Turkish rum. In 1972, the mayor's office was set up in 1987, the county Aydıncık formed.
