Babayevo (town), Vologda Oblast

Babayevo (Russian Бабаево ) is a city in North-West Russia. It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 12,073 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 250 km west of the Oblasthauptstadt Vologda on the Kolp, a tributary of the opening into the Volga Suda. The nearest town Ustjuschna 67 km southeast of Babayevo.

Babayevo is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Babayevo built in the 15th century and was first mentioned in 1461 as a village in documents.

Founded in 1822 by the then local owner in Babayevo on the banks of Kolp an iron foundry, which later specialization included in the manufacture of railroad tracks. The iron ore was then promoted in the local environment, but this still was no longer profitable in the same century. The iron work was thereupon be dissolved.

1904 Babayevo received a railroad connection to the new line of Saint Petersburg to Vyatka. At the station incurred a locomotive depot was built, what the place once again brought a certain importance and allowed to increase the population. 1925, when Babayevo already had about 6000 inhabitants, it received town rights and was raised two years later to Rajonzentrum.
