Sheksna, Sheksninsky District, Vologda Oblast

Scheksna (Russian Шексна ) is an urban-type settlement in the Vologda Oblast (Russia) with 20,953 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is situated about 75 kilometers as the crow flies west of Oblastverwaltungszentrums Vologda and 30 kilometers northeast of Cherepovets city on the left bank of the same name Volga tributary Scheksna.

Scheksna is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Scheksna.

History

Beginning in 1951, was developed in connection with the expansion of existing since the beginning of the 19th century Marie canal system for Volga - Baltic Canal and the establishment of Scheksna Dam with hydroelectric power plant ( Scheksninskaja GES, 1958 ), close to the old village Nikolskoje a working class neighborhood.

Economy and infrastructure
