Badal Roy

Badal Roy ( Roy Choudhury Amerendra; * 1945 in Kumilla, British India, now Bangladesh ) is a tabla player who is active in the field of improvised music and jazz.

Badal Roy emigrated in 1968 to the United States, where he earned his living first as waiters in Indian restaurants. He then appeared as Ragaspieler with Steve Gorn on in a restaurant in Manhattan, where Miles Davis was aware of him.

After recording with Davis ( Get Up with It ) and John McLaughlin, he worked with musicians such as Herbie Mann, Dave Liebman, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Perry Robinson, Dizzy Gillespie, Lonnie Liston Smith, Andreas Vollenweider, Yoko Ono and Nana Simopoulos. In 1988 he became a member of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time band. Since the mid- 1990s, he also works with the Brazilian guitar duo Duofel.
