The Balakowski rayon (Russian Балаковский район ) is a raion in Russia's Saratov Oblast. The administrative center is the district-free city Balakowo.

Geography

Geographical location and water

The Rajon Balakowo located in the northern part of the Saratov Oblast, about 150 kilometers northeast of the city of Saratov. The Raion is located on the eastern bank of the Volga River, at the southern end of the Saratov Reservoir. The Rajon is centrally intersected in east-west direction from the Grand Irgis, which flows south of the city Balakowo into the Volga.

Economy

The main industries in the Raion include the production of mineral fertilizers, fibers, furniture, and energy. It also found raw material deposits of limestone and brick clay, which are used among other things for the production of bricks.
