Balanops

Balanops is the only plant genus of the family of Balanopaceae within the order of Malpighienartigen ( Malpighiales ). The approximately nine species are found only in the southwestern Pacific.

Description

The Balanops species are trees or shrubs; they look similar to Myrica. The arranged alternate or translucent whorls, stalked leaves are simple, leathery and pinnately. The leaf margin is smooth or serrated. Stipules absent.

The Balanops species are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The male flowers are summarized in kitten -like inflorescences. The female flowers appear singly in a fruit cup ( cupula ) of spirally arranged bracts. The bloom is reduced; in the male flowers is still a scale present in the female flowers they are missing completely. The male flowers usually contain five to six ( two to twelve) stamens. Stamens are present or absent. Two to three carpels are fused to a syncarp, superior ovaries. There are two free pen available. Pollination is by wind ( anemophily ).

Stone fruits contain one to three seeds. To the drupes around the fruit cups are still present, similar to those of oaks.

Systematics and distribution

The Balanopaceae family was erected by George Bentham and Joseph Dalton Hooker. The name Balanopaceae Benth. & Hook. f nom. cons. is conserved. The type genus of the family is Balanopaceae Balanops Baill. Balanops The botanical genus name is derived from the Greek: for Balanos glans and ops for " look alike ". The Balanopaceae family is close to the families of the Trigoniaceae, Dichapetalaceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Euphroniaceae. Previously she was placed in the orders fagales or Buxales.

Balanops species occur in the southwestern Pacific, Vanuatu, and Fiji ( sort of), New Caledonia ( seven species) and in the Australian state of Queensland before ( sort of).

In the genre of Balanops and thus in the family there are nine to twelve species:

  • Balanops australiana F.Muell. It occurs only in the northern Queensland.
  • Balanops balansae Baill. Coming into New Caledonia before only on Mt Mou and Mt Nékando.
  • Balanops microstachya Baill. Coming into New Caledonia only in " rade de Canala ".
  • Balanops oliviformis Baill. It occurs only in the central New Caledonia.
  • Balanops pachyphylla Baill. ex Guillaumin: It occurs in New Caledonia.
  • Balanops pancheri Baill. ( Syn: Balanops pancheri var simplex Baill, Balanops theophrasta Baill, Balanops acicarpa S.Moore. . ): It occurs only in New Caledonia.
  • Balanops pedicellata ( Guillaumin ) Hjelmq. ( Syn: Balanops vitiensis ( ACSm. ) Hjelmq. ): It occurs to Vanuatu and Fiji.
  • Balanops sparsifolia ( Schltr. ) Hjelmq. It occurs in New Caledonia.
  • Balanops vieillardii Baill. Comes before you, including the Isle of Pines in southeastern New Caledonia.
