Banggi Island

Banggi ( Malay: Pulau Banggi, sometimes Bangi ) is the Malaysian state of Sabah owned island off the northern tip of Borneo. The island belongs administratively to the district of Kudat Kudat Division of.

Banggi has an area of 441 km ² and 20,000 inhabitants, the highest elevation is 529 m. Located on the southern tip of the island, the small town Karakit with health center, mosque and an office of the Forest Service. Approximately 24 ha of the island in 1984 declared a protected area ( Class VI Virgin Jungle Reserve, VJR ).

To the southeast lies a number of other smaller islands. 5 km to the west lies Pulau Balambangan, 15 km to the southeast of Pulau Malawali.

Banggi is located at the transition from westerly from its South China Sea to the Sulu Sea in the east, and is joined by the two seas in the north Balabacstraße of the Philippine island of Balabac separately.
