Barjac, Lozère

Barjac is a commune in the Lozère department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to Arrondissement Mende and Canton Chanac. The community is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Chanac. Mayor ( Maire ) is in the legislature from 2008 to 2014 Francis Bergogne. The village has 682 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) on an area of ​​29.92 km ².

Geography

Barjac lies in the valley of the river Lot at the confluence with the Ginèze between Mende and Chanac. The village lies at an altitude 650-1212 m on the edge of the Causse- Changefège. Neighboring municipalities are Cultures, Balsièges, Esclanèdes and Gabrias.

History

In the 19th century Roman mosaics and pottery have been found in Barjac. In the Middle Ages, the area belonged to Barjac and the place itself to possession of the Barons of Cénaret, this played an important role during the Wars of Religion.

Demographics

The population numbers have fallen substantially since the mid-19th century. In 1841 the town had 1,028 inhabitants yet. Thereafter, the population decreased significantly. Since 1968, then, the population has increased again by almost 50 %.

Barjac is located on the National Road D88. The nearest motorway is the A75 ( European route E11) about 12 km as the crow west, accessible via the departmental road D808. Main occupation is agriculture, forestry and small industrial enterprises.

Attractions
