Battenans-Varin

Battenans - Varin is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Battenans - Varin is on 560 m, 7 km west of Maîche and about 30 km south of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The double municipality extends in the Jura, on a terrace on the southeastern slope of the valley of the Dessoubre, at the northern foot of Mont de Vougney.

The area of ​​6.38 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The western and northern boundary runs along the Dessoubre, the deeply cut in spiral running in the surrounding Jura plateau flows to the northeast. The steep valley slopes are traversed by Kalkfelsbändern. From the river, the municipality's area extends southeastward over a 100 m high scarp on the terrace of Battenans. This site terrace is dominated by a steep, mostly forested and an average of 150 m high slope that leads on to the plateau of Mont -de- Vougney. With 740 m find the highest mountains of Battenans - Varin is achieved. The eastern boundary of the municipality in this case runs mostly above the escarpment, which is crowned at different places of the rocks of a rugged limestone layer.

The southern part of the area includes the catchment area of the stream of Varin, who is deeply incised into the surrounding plateau. It is bordered on the north by the slopes of Mont -de- Vougney, in the east of the heights of the Faux Verger and to the south by Mont Olivot.

The municipality consists of the two districts Battenans (560 m) on the terrace and Varin (450 m) in the basin of the village Bach at the foot of Mont de Vougney. Neighboring communities of Battenans - Varin are Cour -Saint -Maurice in the north, Orgeans -Blanche Fontaine and Mont -de- Vougney in the east, Saint- Julien- lès- Russey and Rosureux Vaucluse in the south and the west.

History

In the Middle Ages Battenans and Varin belonged to the reign of Saint -Julien. Together with the Franche- Comté reached both towns with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Since the time of the French Revolution Varin was part of the community Battenans. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Battenans was officially renamed in 1936 in Battenans - Varin.

Population

With 75 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Battenans - Varin is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 250 people were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and infrastructure

Battenans - Varin was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming, arable farming and fruit growing ) embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are very few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares. The main access is from the D39 ( road through the Dessoubre valley). Further road links exist with Orgeans and Mont -de- Vougney.
