Beaumont-du-Périgord

Beaumont -du -Périgord is a commune with 1101 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Dordogne ( Aquitaine region ).

Location

Beaumont is located about 30 kilometers south-east of Bergerac and about 50 kilometers south-west of Sarlat- la -Caneda.

History

The lying on a hill Bastide Beaumont -du -Périgord was founded in 1272; The occasion was a protection agreement three local feudal lords to the English King Edward I. The construction initiated the Seneschal of Guyenne, Lucas de Thaney. The protection of these " first royal bastide ", one of the most important in the Périgord, lasted until 1442, when the French they occupied simultaneously with the Bastide Molière. However, the English were finally driven until after the Battle of Castillon in 1453.

The plan of the town Beaumont is not - as usual - a rectangle, but a lying 'H'. From the attachment is little left. The surrounding wall has disappeared.

Attractions

  • Church of Saint-Front ( 13-14. Century). The enormous temple shows the typical features of a fortress with defensive towers, pitch nose and a circumferential wall walk. Because of the absence of a castle siege in case it served as a last resort. The only decorations on the church building is that of a balcony and a frieze of figures arched portal.
  • Of the once 16 city gates only is the Porte de Lusies or Luzier.
  • Today's town hall dates from 1789 and served for a long time as a hospital.
  • A former convent building ( Couvent des Dames de Foi ) from 1707 today serves as a retirement home.
  • Just 4 kilometers north-west are the Château de spell ( 15-16. Century) and the Romanesque parish church of the town, with its beautiful bell tower in the middle of the cemetery.
  • The Château de Luzier from the 17-18. Century is nearly 4 kilometers west.
