Béjar

Béjar is a municipality in the southern Spanish province of Salamanca.

Location

The city is located about 210 kilometers west of Madrid on the river Cuerpo de Hombre. The surrounding area is rather hilly and is dominated by cattle and cultivation.

Béjar is a town of the province of Salamanca and is one of the autonomous community of Castile and Leon ( Castilla y León) to. Béjar is 72 km from the city of Salamanca.

History

The first inhabitants who lived on the territory of the city, were the Vettones (400 BC). They settled the southern part of today's Old Town. The rest of the urban area to the " La Corredera " was then dominated by agriculture. At the beginning of the first century after Christ Béjar passed into the hands of the Romans. Under Roman rule ( until 450 AD), the city grew into an important trading center.

In the year 713 Salamanca was occupied by the Moors: As part of the Moorish invasion of the Iberian Peninsula Musa ibn Nusayr conquered the city. It was not until 1085 it was by Alfonso VI. recaptured by Leon. From this time fortifications and city walls were built.
