Belišće

Belišće is a city in the Croatian region of Slavonia. It has 10,825 inhabitants (as of 2011), mostly Croats, and belongs to the Osijek - Baranja.

History

Belišće originated in the late 19th century as a workers' settlement of the sawmill of the Hungarian businessman Gutmann. From 1884 here an extensive timber industry developed with processing wood works.

After the Second World War was one of the largest in Belišće Cellulose-/Papierindustrien Southeastern Europe.

In the Croatian War of Independence 1991, the city remained under Croatian control. However, the proximity to the Serbian occupied Baranja gave the city daily Granatierungen.
