Beru Island

Beru ( formerly known as Eliza, Francis Iceland, Mary, Peroat, Peru Island or Sunday ) is an island in the southern part of the archipelago of the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It belongs to the area of the island nation of Kiribati. The island consists mostly of a 14- km-long reef, which extends from northwest to southeast and at the widest point approximately 4.75 km wide. In the middle of the reef is made up of the shallow waters Nuka Lagoon.
Geography
The island is located 96 km east of Tabiteuea Atoll and 426 km south-east of Tarawa Atoll, near the equator. The land mass consists of more than one-third of the shallow coral reef. At the north end was almost closed and mangrove lagoon Tabiang over time. Settlements are located along the inside of the lagoon.
In the smaller lagoons on the northern and southern fish ponds were created. The Nuka- lagoon has a wide access to the sea, which, however, can not be used as a port. The closest island is the island Nikunau.
