Marakei

Marakei, formerly Metthew Iceland or Maraki, is a small atoll in the northern part of the archipelago of the Gilbert Islands. It is located northeast of the main atoll of Tarawa.
Geography
The central lagoon of the atoll consists of many deep pools and is surrounded by two islands, which are separated only by two narrow channels voneinender. The two channels ( Baretoa pass and pass Reweta ) are so flat that they are passable at low tide. The islands of the atoll cover an area of 14.1 km ², the central lagoon 24.86 km ².
Capital is Rawannawi. On the northern tip of the atoll lies the airfield Marakei.
