Abemama

Abemama (also under the name Apemama, Abamama, Apamama, Dundas, Hopper Iceland, Roger Simpson Simpson Iceland or Iceland known) is an atoll in the center of the archipelago of the Gilbert Islands that make up the nation of Kiribati. The atoll is located about 150 km southeast of the capital, Tarawa Atoll, just above the equator.

The village Kariatebike serves as the center of government of the atoll with administrative buildings, a police station and a hospital.

Geography

The land area of the atoll is 27.37 km ². It has, according to census of 2010 a population of 3213 inhabitants in 13 settlements. The islands of the atoll enclosing a deep, 152.49 km ² large lagoon.

The islands in the eastern part of the atoll are connected by footbridges and bridges to each other so that you can move to the next by car from one island. The outlying islands Abatiku and bike, in more recent case also Biike, located on the southwest side of the atoll.

History

Abemama became known through the declaration of the British protectorate by Captain Davis of the ship Royalist on 27 May 1892. In 1889, Robert Louis Stevenson lived here. Near the place Tabontebike the grave of the tyrant ruler Tem Binoka (also in the case Tembinok '), which was made famous by Stevenson's novella In the South Seas.

During the Second World War Abemama was under Japanese occupation and was freed in 1943 in the Pacific War by the Americans.

After the Second World War Abemama standing next to Tarawa as the new administrative center of the colony to the decision, but because of the better harbor conditions, the choice fell on South Tarawa.

Modern Times

Local administrative authority is the Island Council ( Iceland Council).

Traffic
