The Bifrost University ( Háskólinn á Bifrost ) is an Icelandic college with boarding facilities, which is located about 30 kilometers from Borgarnes in the west of the country. It forms the center of the village Bifrost, where mainly members of the university and students live.

It offered both economic as well as legal and social science courses.

History

The university was founded in 1918 as a secondary school ( Samvínnuskólinn ) in Reykjavik. It was led by an Icelandic cooperative and was originally planned as a training center for employees of the cooperative. The founder and first director of the school was Jónas Jónsson from Hrifla, who was Member of Parliament for the Progressive Party for a long time. He studied at Ruskin College, Oxford, and embodied for his time with innovative ideas on education. 1955 the school moved to its current location in the country. The school initially offered a two-year school training in retail management for 16 - to 18 -year-old up. In the 80s and 90s, the school has gradually evolved into an academic institution that offered undergraduate and graduate degree programs in business administration.

End of the 90s, the University benefited from three major factors:

  • The construction of a tunnel in 1998 between Reykjavik and Borgarnes which shortened the travel time between the capital and the university on one and a half hours
  • Increasing demand for higher education in the Icelandic society
  • New case law, which permitted universities to charge fees

Thus, the number of students increased significantly, the study guide has been expanded and the University funded in addition to the state support increasingly on fees.

2006, the university was renamed " Bifrost University " or " Háskólinn á Bifrost ".
