Birch Heath is a municipality in the Rhein- Pfalz-Kreis in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Maxdorf.

Geography

Birch Heath lies to the west of Ludwigshafen in the Palatinate. Adjacent communities - from north clockwise - are way home on the sand, Lambsheim, Maxdorf Fußgönheim, Ellerstadt, Bad Durkheim and Erpolzheim.

History

In 1936 the large housing estate was built on a hundred acres of land, which was disputed for centuries between Lambsheim way home and on sand. He once belonged to the defunct village Eyersheim. From the German Labor Front, a settlement for 528 people was created, which was initially managed by way of home. The first houses were located east of the cemetery in 1952 applied to the north of the present church. 1939 extended the settlement by the development of today's village center with larger-scale one-and two -family homes. 1946, the population had grown to about 1200, mainly by immigrants and refugees who were housed in Behelfswohnheimen in the northeast of the village. But still lacked any public facilities, you described the settlement as the "forgotten village".

On 1 October 1952 from the settlement of the independent municipality Birch Heath. First Mayor was Albertine Scherer. It emerged very soon its own primary school, kindergarten, fire station and other municipal facilities. The Behelfswohnheime 1964-70 were replaced by blocks of flats and terraced houses.

In 1970, Birch Heath with Ludwigshafen an annexation treaty, which was however rejected by Maxdorf and the Rhineland-Palatinate state government. A lawsuit was unsuccessful. In 1983 the village hall was built.

Religions

The Protestant parish church constructed in 1951 came from a Notkirchenprogramm the postwar era of Otto Bartning. As one of the few of the 50 built churches this has remained relatively unchanged and therefore is a listed building. The atmosphere of the church interior is dominated by wood construction and the pediment is designed as a window front. The altar is located in a locked closet, thus the Church can also be used for everyday purposes.

The first Catholic Church was built in 1968 from wood, but had derelict in 1995 by the new parish church of St. Joseph the Worker in Birch Heath be replaced. The brick building includes meeting and youth centers.

2008 38.4 percent of the population Protestant and 30.7 percent were Catholic. The other belonged to a different religion or no religious affiliation were.

The local council in Birch Heath consists of 20 council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 a proportional representation, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Coat of arms

The blazon of the arms is: " divided by black and gold, the top three silver birch trees, down a red mill wheel ".

It was approved in 1979 by the district government Neustadt. The birches point talking on the place name and the mill wheel is reminiscent of the Eyersheimer mill which was formerly at today's district. The colors black and gold refer to the Palatinate, gold and red on way home on the sand.

Natural and cultural monuments

The 1987 designated natural monument Silver grassland south of the town is a location situated sandy nutrient-poor grasslands, the habitat for specialized insect and plant species such as the centrifugal wasp and ant lion is the dunes.

Zoo

The zoo birch heath was opened in 1964 and holds around 50 species of animals.

Regular events

  • At the beginning of each year organizes the Carnival Club " The Cranes " two ceremonial meetings in the village hall in Birch Heath.
  • Every two years, organized the village fete on the village square redesigned in the summer. The hospitality and the design of the framework program are supported by the many birch Heidener clubs. Traffic

South of Birch Heath, the Federal Highway runs 650 ( Bad Durkheim -Ludwigshafen ). In the surrounding villages lead bus. In Maxdorf Fußgönheim and Ellerstadt are stops of the tram line Bad Durkheim -Ludwigshafen (formerly Rhein- Haardt Bahn ). Birch Heath belongs to the tariff zone of the transport association Rhein- Neckar.

Education

In Birch Heath there are two kindergartens or day care centers and a primary school with the library.
