Birni - N'Konni is a department in the Tahoua region in Niger.

Geography

The Department is located in the south of the country, bordering Nigeria. It consists of the township Birni - N'Konni and the rural communities Allela, Bazaga and Tsernaoua. The eponymous capital of the department is Birni - N'Konni.

History

After independence in 1960, Niger's territory into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ) was divided. One of them was the district Birni - N'Konni. 1964 was divided into seven administrative reform Niger departments, the predecessor of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessor of the later departments. As part of the district Birni - N'Konni was converted to the district Birni - N'Konni. In 1998, the former arrondissements of Niger were raised to departments, each headed by an appointed Council of Ministers is prefect.
