Blood Mountain is the third studio album by the American Progressive-Metal/Sludge-Band Mastodon. It was published on 8 September 2006 via Reprise Records. For the song " Colony of Birchmen " the band for a Grammy Award in the Best Metal category was nominated performance.

Formation

In summer 2005, Mastodon were taken by Reprise Records, a subsidiary of the major labels Warner Music under contract. Reprise struck the band in front of several producers for the album. The band, however, preferring to work as the previous album with Matt Bayles Leviathan. After participating in the Ozzfest tour, the band began writing songs for the new album.

The recordings took place in the studios Studio Litho, Red Room Recording Studio and Jupiter over a period of two months. As a guest vocal appearances Scott Kelly of the band Neurosis (with the song " Crystal Skull" ), Josh Homme from the band Queens of the Stone Age (for the song " Colony of Birchmen ") and Cedric Bixler - Zavala of the band The Mars Volta on (with the song " Siberian Divide ").

Background

Finally, the protagonist reaches the crystal skull on the top of the mountain, which is a kind of doorway into another universe.

The song " Colony of Birchmen " is a tribute to the song "The Colony of Slippermen " by the British band Genesis. The song " Pendulous Skin" contains a hidden track a " fan letter " which was spoken by Josh Homme.

Reception

Petra Schurer from Metal Hammer emphasized the songs " live off their wealth of detail and exciting passages in which the musicians fight each part mutually complement some gorgeous ". She gave the album six out of seven points. Boris Emperor of Rock Hard magazine called Blood Mountain as one of the greatest musical experiences of late and missed nine out of ten.

Blood Mountain reached # 32 in the U.S. album charts. With number 96 in the German and number 46 in the UK album charts Mastodon achieved in these countries for the first time made ​​it into the album charts.
