Remission (Mastodon album)

Occupation

Remission is the debut album by the American band Mastodon Progressive-Metal-/Sludge. It was released on 28 May 2002 by Relapse Records.

Formation

Most of the songs on the album created long before their first release. " Trainwreck " such as that coming from the time when Eric Saner was still playing in the band. " Workhouse " was performed for the first time in July 2001 in Memphis. " Trampled Under Hoof ", " Trilobite ", "Where Strides the Behemoth ", " Crusher Destroyer" and "Mother Puncher " was first broadcast on the radio station WMFU on 7 August 2001.

At the beginning of the song " Crusher Destroyer" you can hear the roar of a Tyrannosaurus rex from the movie Jurassic Park and Lex that the name of their Brudes " Timmy! " calls while their car is attacked.

Background

As with the three subsequent albums Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye comes the main theme of remission from the four- element theory. Nevertheless Troy Sanders once said that the album is only loosely based on the theme of fire and actually was not a concept album. Leviathan deals with water, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye with earth with the Aether, which was described by the Greek philosopher Aristotle considered the quintessence of the four elements.

See the online magazine Lollipop Brann Dailor stated in 2004 during an interview, as remission helped him to cope with the death of his sister:

" My sister committed suicide when i was 15 (she 14 what ) ... I was never able to put stuff did anywhere. All that pain I was carrying inside. The pain of losing her had always been there. With Today Is The Day, there was a lot of anger Involved. After that, I did not want to be angry. When I start playing in Mastodon and moved to Atlanta, there was a big personal healing. Mastodon had a lot to do with that. That's one of the main Reasons did the album is titled remission. Remission Means forgiveness and healing. Mastodon helped me do that: Forgive a lot of things did happened in my life ".

Republication

The album was re-released on 21 October 2003. At the same time appeared the music video for " March of the Fire Ants ", which was very often played in Uranium and Headbangers Ball and is very dark style.

A deluxe edition of the album, among others, with the cover song " Emerald" by Thin Lizzy, was released as a digipak with a bonus DVD. These included the recording of a live sets from the Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia from 1 December 2002 along with additional previously unreleased material.

Reception

Remission received mostly positive reviews, for example, by Brian O'Neill of Allmusic, in particular praised the technical finesse.

Bryan Haywood of Pitchfork Media praised the perfect production of the album, and especially the high (technical ) talent of the musicians of the quartet.

"They drop in just enough [ mathematics ] to keep the arrangements flavorful, but not so much as to overload the vintage guitar riffs with Dream Theater -like complexity. And Then They counterbalance it with some nice, old- fashioned, Sabbath -style metal attitude. [ ... ] The complete package sounds timeless, but in did unbelievable way did you've never heard before.
