Bluetooth profile#SIM Access Profile .28SAP.2C SIM.2C rSAP.29

The SIM Access Profile (SAP, also rSAP for engl. Remote) is a Bluetooth data transfer protocol that is used primarily in mobile phones. Thus, it is possible that a built- in a motor vehicle mobile phone via Bluetooth connects to the SIM card from a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. The phone is then in the so-called standby mode, the only minimal exposure of the cell phone battery. From this point on the existing SIM card data will be used ( in principle, the network access permission according to the respective mobile contract ) from car phone with its own GSM transmitter and receiver unit. Phone calls and messages are routed via the vehicle antenna of the car phone.

Advantages and Technology

SAP has the advantage that the end of the vehicle system is much more powerful and therefore allows better reception and higher reliability. It should also be used for the car phone no second SIM card more. The speech quality is increased with the use of SAP, since the possible error, or noise sources for the handset omitted inside the vehicle.

You should not confuse the SIM Access Profile with the so-called hands- free profiles, this is built into the vast majority of hands-free devices such as Bluetooth hands-free for all of BMW as well as most of Audi (see below). Here the phone with a Bluetooth antenna of the mobile phone is used, which is to be assessed as unfavorable as regards the reception characteristics. BMW and Audi have therefore called for popular mobile phones snap-in adapters, which connect the phone to the vehicle antenna and also charge the battery.

In the SAP, the main thing that network operators access data on the SIM card from another phone, in this case, the car phone used to log into the wireless network. The Bluetooth specification still permits the transfer of any APDU from the SIM, therefore can for example also be easily read out the address and telephone data from the car phone and shown on the display. Since the SIM access profile applies only to the SIM card, only the Address Book entries can be transferred architectural reasons, which are also stored on the SIM card and not in the phone memory. However, modern SAP units have access to the contacts of the mobile device and thus offer a transparent use of both address books via the separate Bluetooth Profile ( PBAP ).

Another common name for SIM Access Profile is rSAP ( Remote SIM Access Profile ). Here there is also the distinction between client and server, the mobile phone with the SIM card acts usually as a SIM access server and the speakerphone of the vehicle represents the client. A major advantage of SAP over a simple hands-free (HFP ) must report the much longer speech or hours because the battery is much less burdened by the disabled wireless transmitter unit.

Technically interesting that the SIM interface, which is usually located directly in the mobile phone and only a low voltage of 1.8 V at currents performed by some uA be extended using the SAP virtually via Bluetooth to a distance up to 100 m may (depending on the Bluetooth range ). This fact makes the SAP also interesting for those applications whose hardware for reasons of space can not be placed where the operator ( the user accessible ) SIM -card slot is located.

Criticism

Besides the advantages of the SAP technology also has drawbacks. The phone itself is no longer logged into the network, making all forms of communication are disabled on your mobile phone. This leads for example to the fact that incoming SMS messages are stored in the mobile phone instead of in memory of the vehicle. These can be read there, but must be manually transferred to the phone when they should be there to read. Likewise, for example, smart phones with navigation app no map data or traffic jam information about mobile internet recharge while the unit by SAP is coupled to the vehicle. However, modern SAP units available to other devices via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi located in the car, such as laptop computers, an Internet connection available.

Furthermore - unlike a normal handsfree - not simply be switched into private mode, in which continues the conversation on the mobile phone. Even when staying outside the vehicle can result in an undesired effect: Suppose the SAP unit has control of the mobile phone and calls can be noticed or accepted only in the vehicle. The mobile phone user is outside of the vehicle and others take a conversation in the vehicle, in this case is a general risk of abuse. In a simple speakerphone this problem, however, also because not all mobile phones show the use of such.

Modern hands-free devices show that even with them the phonebook synchronization works. This reduces the advantage of SAP to the better reception and transmission performance due to the external antenna, thereby resulting low radiation exposure ( SAR ) in the car and the longer battery life of the phone by switching off its transmitter and receiver unit.

Support

Vehicles with SAP support

Currently the following vehicles can be equipped from the factory with SIM Access Profile:

Mobile phones with SAP support

A large number of mobile phones provides support for SAP. Due to the increasing number of smartphone operating systems, however, were popular, offering no SIM Access Profile. Almost all mobile phones that are based on an unmodified Android, iOS, Maemo, MeeGo and Windows Phone 7 is not yet supported SIM Access Profile.

An exception to this are the Galaxy series, some Samsung models. This offer - as well as most Nokia mobile phones - full SAP support (also available on the phone book itself ). Since Android officially not yet SAP support, suggesting a proprietary development from Samsung this implementation.

In the Android operating system, although many users have already expressed their willingness to SAP, this request has not yet been provided to date by the developers for a concrete implementation.

Some Android devices from Samsung and HTC, the functionality of SAP can be retrofitted with an app. To this end, the smartphone must, however, have a root access, which can be installed on special unofficial update files.
