Alcatel Mobile Phones

Alcatel was a French manufacturer of instruments and systems for telecommunications and claims to be the market leader in high-speed Internet access and optical networks. Alcatel's customers were network operators, Internet service providers, enterprises and private customers. On 1 December 2006 Alcatel merged with Lucent Technologies on Alcatel -Lucent.

Corporate Development

About Alcatel was founded on 31 May 1898 by French engineer Pierre Azaria under the name Compagnie Générale d' Electricité ( CGE). 1966 took over CGE Société Alsacienne de Constructions Atomiques, de Télécommunications et d' Electronique ( Alcatel ). After the merger with Thomson Télécommunications in 1985, the company operated under the name Alcatel Alsthom, the telecommunications sector occurred since then under the name Alcatel.

In 1988, CGE integrated by the conglomerate International Telephone and Telegraph ( ITT) acquired telecommunications division, including the German Standard Elektrik Lorenz AG (SEL). The telecommunications division was spun off as a subgroup Alcatel NV.

The close contacts with the state postal and telecommunications companies ( PTT) and top politicians led both in Germany as in France scandals with great public interest: In the " Love Boat " affair occurred back in 1991 Lothar Späth by the Office of Baden-Württemberg Minister President. The President of the French parent company, Pierre Suard, was deposed in 1995 in effect on suspicion of fraud and embezzlement by a court order. He was succeeded by Serge Tchuruk, who led the company until the end.

Carried by the Internet hype, the company grew through acquisitions especially in the U.S. market. The onset already in the 1990s decline in prices in the telecommunications market and the bursting of the dotcom bubble collapsed, the company in 2001 in the biggest crisis in its history, and led to record losses and a massive loss of jobs. At the height of the telecommunications euphoria Alcatel moved his Group-wide center of expertise for fiber optic cable to Mönchengladbach, where twelve new fiber drawing towers were inaugurated, which had to be shut down a few months later. The copper telecommunications technology was spun off in 2001 into a separate company called Nexans and floated. Alcatel held at the newly founded only 20 percent of the shares. 2005 fiber-optic technology was sold to the Dutch competitors Draka. Only in 2004 positive quarterly results were achieved again, but at a significantly reduced level of sales.

In August 2004, Alcatel agreed a joint venture with the Chinese company TCL, TCL & Alcatel Mobile Phones Ltd.. (in short: TAMP ). The community was one of 45% Alcatel. In May 2005, followed by a ten-year license agreement, so TAMP a wholly owned subsidiary of TCL was. TAMP was renamed TCT Mobile Limited. The company sells worldwide through subsidiaries ( Germany: TCT Mobile Germany GmbH ) Mobile phones under the name " ALCATEL ONE TOUCH".

On April 2, 2006 Alcatel announced to merge within twelve months with his U.S. counterparts Lucent Technologies. The merged group is called Alcatel- Lucent, the merger was effective on 1 December 2006.

As part of the Group's restructuring and focus on the core business of Alcatel has issued the divisions satellite technology, transport systems and security, monitoring and control of the French Thales Group. Around 11,000 people are affected, the turnover of these areas is approximately € 2 billion. In return, the participation of Alcatel- Lucent to Thales increased from just under 10 to about 21 percent. This proportion was sold to Dassault Aviation in 2009.

Car production

Between 1941 and 1946, the Compagnie Générale d' Electricité was an automobile manufacturer. The designer Jean -Albert Grégoire had designed an electric car that was marketed as CGE Tudor. Until the end of production originated about 200 vehicles.
