Bob Johnston

Bob Johnston ( born May 14, 1932 in Hillsboro (Texas ); actually Donald William Johnston ) is a rock music producer who was best known for his work with Bob Dylan, but also produced a number of other folk and country-rock performer.

Life

Childhood and youth

Johnston was born in 1932 in Texas. His mother, Diane, who already wrote title for Gene Autry, taught him to compose songs. After Johnston had finished his service in the Navy, he moved to Fort Worth.

Beginnings as a Rockabilly

In Fort Worth he wrote for rockabilly singer Mac Curtis few songs, including You Is not Treatin ' Me Right, I'll Be Gentle and You are My Very Special Baby. Johnston sent a few demo recordings to New York City, hoping there to have a chance at a career. In fact, the title came to Robert Mellin, the forwarded Johnston Clyde Otis. Otis was A & R manager for Mercury Records and Johnston was the single Born To Love One Woman import. The song was also covered by Ric Cartey for RCA Victor. It was followed by further rockabilly singles of Johnston Chic Records and I'm Hypnotysed at Dot Records. None of these sheets reached the charts.

Career as a producer

In 1964 Johnston a job as a producer for Kapp Records in New York City and later married songwriter Joy Byers, with whom he several hit songs, including Elvis Presley and Timi Yuro, wrote.

A little later, Johnston then took a job with Columbia Records, where in 1965 he produced a large part of Bob Dylan 's classic Highway 61 Revisited. Even during the recording work on the album Johnston came up with the idea to move the recording location from New York to Nashville, Tennessee, to create a more country -oriented sound. Blonde on Blonde in 1966 a great success. By 1973, Johnston produced all other Dylan albums and also collaborated with artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, the Byrds, Leonard Cohen, Marty Robbins, Patti Page and Dino Valente.

After Johnston the early '70s his salary had become too low, he left Columbia, and began to work for other labels. During these years he produced photographs of Lindisfarne, Tracy Nelson, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Michael Murphey, Hoyt Axton, Joe Ely and Loudon Wainwright III. After 1984, Johnston moved for a few years out of the music scene back in 1988 again appeared on the scene with the production of some unknown albums and worked Then in 1992 along with Willie Nelson.
