Bodio

Bodio is a municipality in the district of Giornico in the district of Leventina in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

It is located in the lower Valle Leventina on the left side of the valley.

History

1227 Bodio was mentioned as Boidi and the local church of San Stefano. The latter was presumably destroyed along with a large part of the village by a landslide in the 15th century. The present church dates from the 19th century.

In the first half of the 19th century, the Ticino River flooded the town several times. These natural disasters caused great damage and also demanded fatalities. End of the 19th century a great wave of emigration. About one- fifth of the population at that time Bodios emigrated to the USA and settled mainly in California and Nevada.

Economy

The construction of the Gotthard railway industry came to the area. The best-known company is now the Timcal, which produces synthetic graphite and lubricant for high temperatures. Up to 4 acres of vineyards there in the municipality no longer farming.

The southern portal of the Gotthard base tunnel is located at the very eastern edge of the municipality of Bodio, the installation space and the visitor center are located in the neighboring municipality Pollegio.
