The southern slope of the Brends lies on the boundary of the municipality of Simon forest in Emmendingen. Here he is after the candelabra and the Rohrhardsberg - Farnberg plateau along with the Rosseck the third highest peak. In the course of an exchange area in 1977, the membership of the observation tower and the guest house and a farm on the north- western slope of the upper Simon forest, Emmendingen moved to the town of Furtwangen, Schwarzwald- Baar-Kreis.

The Summit provides good visibility a beautiful panoramic view of the high ridge, Feldberg, Ballon, Schauinsland and Kandel. To the south is the Swiss Alps from Santis Mountain in the Appenzell Alps to the " triumvirate " Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the Bernese Oberland, in the northwest of the Vosges from Gazon de Faite to Mont Sainte -Odile and in the east of the escarpment of the Swabian Alb of the Zollernalb to see to Hegaualb. At the summit there next to the guest house and the tower still Brend a Friends of Nature House.

Together with the adjoining north Rohrhardsberg forms of Brend one of the largest and highest with over 1,100 m altitude plateaus of the Black Forest. The plateau is one of the largest uncut by roads natural areas of the State of Baden- Wuerttemberg. Access is through a few access roads. European watershed

The Brend is the westernmost and at the same time the highest point of the European extra-alpine watershed between the Rhine and the Danube dar. At the nearby and only about 70 m deeper Martin Chapel stems from the longest source of the Danube river, the Breg. From there, the water takes a 2888 km long way southeast to the Black Sea (if it does not seep to the Donauversinkung and Aachtopf and thus to Lake Constance / Rhein excreted ). This is the source farthest from the mouth of the Danube and is widely known in the region " Source of the Danube dispute" between Furtwangen and Donaueschingen one of the two contenders for the title " Source of the Danube ".

Just 100 meters from springs the Elz River, in the nature reserve Taubergiessen flows northwestward at Lahr in the Rhine. West of the Brend overthrow the tributaries flowing to the Elz Wild Gutach in the approximately 700 m below Simonswälder valley. On Brend therefore, the different erosion performance of the Rhenish system ( the Rhine draining ) with deep valleys and gorges and the Danubian system ( draining to the Danube ) are observed examples with flat high valleys and troughs. The Rhine and its tributaries can develop a greater erosion performance than the Danube because of the shorter way to the sea and the resulting stronger gradient. On Brend meet the landscapes of the Middle Talschwarzwaldes that are part of our community Simon Wald ( Emmendingen ), with the landscapes of the Black Forest, where the town of Furtwangen ( Schwarzwald-Baar -Kreis) counting.

Nearer to home are the sources of Brigach ( the second source of the Danube River ) at Brigach and Gutach in Schoenwald ( a major tributary of the Kinzig ), known by his Triberg Waterfalls. The local tourism administration "Holiday Land" has the four sources with a promising and relatively flat "four- source way " connected.
