British Hockey League

The British Hockey League was between 1982 and 1996, the highest league in ice hockey in Great Britain. When the League was introduced in 1982, it replaced three previously existing regional leagues Inter- City League of the South of England, English League North of Northern England and Northern League from Scotland. The BHL had a main and title sponsor with the Dutch brewer Heineken. Therefore, the league was known as the Heineken League. As a media partner, the British Hockey League, the broadcaster BBC was at her side.

During its existence, the BHL has repeatedly changed the game mode. The top Premier Division was established in 1983. Three years later, the Division One as league below the Premier Division. This was divided into the seasons 1987/88 and 1993/ 94 in a North and a South Conference Conference. In 1987 also the first third-rate Division Two was introduced, but the renamed already for 1988/89 season in English Division One and parted in the summer of 1992, all of the British Hockey League. When the British Hockey League was disbanded in 1996, was founded as a successor to the Ice Hockey Superleague.
