Broklandsau

Broklandsau at Fedderingen Dam bridge

The Broklandsau is a left tributary of the Eider in Norderdithmarschen, a small meadow river that is formed on the B 203 in Welmbüttel of the source streams Wierbek in Norderwolhd and Osterau in the district forestry; latter is in turn fed by the Lindenerau in the north.

Course

The river is located south of the Eider. Approximately four-fifths of the region drained northward over the much branched Broklandsau in the Eider. The Au is a body of water that is in its wide valley to recognize rather than a large " ditch ". Your source currents go back up on the heights around Tellingstedt and in the North Hastedter Moor, which was once covered by a vast lake area. The river in the valley only a very small slope. Therefore, its flow rate is primarily determined by the thrust of the volume of water (precipitation and melt).

Coming from the east, to a large arc around the Süderheistedter Geest, the river attracts relatively straight north. At the height of Lundener Spit, where the valley is partly below sea level, he once took on some bog lakes, of which only a few small residual areas are, however, remained.

History

Even into the 14th century, the waters divided in height Schlichting. The eastward migrating branch resulted initially in the amount of the later Helmkoogs in the Eider. Later this was moved to the mouth of the Eider loop around the opposite Deljekoog. The formerly northward migrating branch ran straight up to the Eider loop at Neuensiel, near St. Anne. He was eventually filled in, as it was no longer necessary as a result of improved drainage on the eastern mouth since then sole branch.

With its wide plains, upriver until Heath was the Broklandsautal formerly one of the major receiving water areas of the Eider. That is, the North Sea flood occurring twice daily penetrated on the once still unprotected mouth of the Eider before up in the interior. The tsunami flooded all next available lowlands. It only became weaker the farther they could distribute. This ratio of Broklandsau and their lowland changed only from the 14th/15th. Century, after the collapse of Mandränken 1362 and 1436 and the immediately succeeding the start of Bedeichungen.

By Mandränken, conditions deteriorated so much that you even felt compelled to the construction of the so-called Aukrugbrücke, this often renewed bridge is still in a narrow strip of land between Moor Ostrohe and Süderheistedt. Alone with this bridge, it was possible to maintain the route between Heath and the eastern section of the heights norderdithmartscher Geest.

Similarly, the situation in the area of the resulting little later Eishemmbrücke between Kleve and Schlichting. This bridge marks the key point in the bottom- cultural evolution Norder Dithmarschens.

Ground mining and reclamation

To create polders in this nassmoorigen lowlands who regularly emerging from inside and outside tides and the high- ground water had to be considered. Therefore, it was enough because not only to create a dike against the outer flood. At the same time the internal flood had to be regulated.

In the narrow passage between Kleve and Schlichting was built for this purpose a dike. It is recorded that in -built in the dike bridge, a forerunner of the Eishemmbrücke that Broklandsau crossed and that they had provided for the purpose of drainage with a Dredge. The structure shielded the south and west parts of the lowlands lying against the outer flood. The state of the internal water but given the riparian henceforth even with the help of the Dredge. Thus, it was possible to make this part of the valley available until up to Heide.

Only after this example was by the fact embank also the northern part of the plain. This began with the Eider dike, which was pulled from the sea wall at the Eider estuary to the eastern mouth of the river Broklandsau. Then received the Kleve - Schlichtinger dike a wing dike to the Eider. With the Eiderdeich, the Kleve - Schlichtinger dike and the final in the West Lundener Spit, was henceforth also the northern half of Broklandsautales that Norder Hamme, round enclosed, was thus protected from storm surges. The drainage and reclamation for the purposes of land reclamation could begin.

As a result of the Uferbedeichungen regularly flowing sea flood had risen higher and higher into the Eider. Accordingly, also the effluent had increased. The accumulated formerly before the river bends, there had led to floods, including in conjunction with the drainage of the Broklandsau. The water itself was looking for a way out of time, across the various headlands. These new channels washed out little by little. Between the original river bed and the new gutters to islands were formed. After decades of development gullies and river bed were no longer distinguishable.

For legal claim to the islands thus formed by the former, specific legal situation is found in the Mirror of Saxony (II § 56, 2, and 3) the following:

The Norderdithmarscher were faster than the right. They poured into the southern rivers Eider and moved the Eiderdeich on the northern edge of the islands thus obtained. The were thus recognizable components of norderdithmarscher " mainland ". It then developed the Bösbütteler, Horster, the Delver, the Bethjehemmer, the Deljekoog, as well as some past smaller polders. The Bethjehemmer and Deljekoog but had to cede Dithmarsch the late 15th century Stapelholm, on the north bank of the Eider; Result of a long legal dispute.

These extensive changes was the Broklandsautal was closed Norderdithmarscher the lowland from the floods of the river Eider. By then gradually developed sewage and grave system, the drainage developed, the main thing about the Broklandsau, but partly also directly into the Eider.

Navigability

The Broklandsau is to ride the last 15 kilometers between Aukrug, Süderheistedt and the mouth of the Eider very well with the canoe.
