The Federal Highway 57 (abbreviated as BAB 57) - Short form: Highway 57 ( Abbreviation: A 57 ) - extends from the Dutch border near Goch in continuation of the A77 ( NL) parallel to the Rhine on the left of the Rhine, Krefeld and Neuss to Cologne. It is part of the European Route 31 (Rotterdam - Hockenheim, the port of Rotterdam is one of the largest seaports and deep-water ports in the world).

Given their high importance for the economy and transport can be described as the A57 Trans - Niederrhein- highway.

Construction and planning

Between junctions 5 ( Sonsbeck ) and 6 ( Alps ) is a former airstrip. When parking the resting places Hamb and Bönninghardt served.

About the L 473 is at junction 12 ( Krefeld- Garden City) is directly connected to the Port of Duisburg ( " Logport ").

At the junction Krefeld- Oppum the A 524 should cross the A57. By 2003, therefore, the local feeder was designated as A 524.

Between the Cross Kamp- Lintfort and Köln- Nord motorway is heavily loaded, so that an extension to three lanes per carriageway in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan of 2004 is provided with the status of priority projects.

The two sections cross the sea Busch ( A 44 ) to the Kaarst (A 52) and Neuss - West to junction Neuss-Süd are already six lanes. As part of the expansion, the junction Neuss-Hafen was completely rebuilt. The intermediate portion of the Kaarst to Neuss - West is under construction and should be completed by 2015.

Since the southern by-pass of Neuss by the A 46 is no longer planned, between the motorway junction Neuss-West and the motorway junction Neuss -Süd, a parallel of the two highways.

Striking the elaborate and winding exit Köln - Worringen is (No. 26). Here are structural inputs for an interchange with the never -built A 54, which should connect the motorways A 61, A 57, A 59 and A 3. Only a small part of the planned A 54 was implemented in the form of the A 542 between the crosses Langenfeld Monheim -Süd. On some maps it is located continued as " planned " over the Rhine to the present exit Köln- Worringen.

The junction Köln- Chorweiler (No. 27) is only in and from the south, ie from Cologne, and from the Köln- Nord, furnished. Who wants from here to the north, must be either " contact " in the interchange or use one of the neighboring driveways.

The southernmost portion after the motorway junction Köln-West is largely expanded six lanes. The highway officially ends after the exit Köln -Ehrenfeld, but runs them in the trough location and partly in the tunnel as six-lane highway towards the city center to the inside channel road, which was, after earlier plans for an urban motorway to be expanded (see also: Cologne city highway ).

From the end of the motorway to Cologne Cathedral is about 3 km; remarkable buildings near the motorway end are the Colonius and the Cologne tower (a tower-shaped skyscraper in Media Park ).

Initially, they should be guided by Cologne to New Town there to be connected to an also unreacted portion of the federal highway 555.

Arson and pile-up in 2012

Unknown set fire on 14 February 2012 against 0:10 clock a stack of plastic pipes beneath a motorway bridge (the tubes superimposed on a asphalt field of Nievenheim to Zons ). The bridge spanned the A57 between the junction Neuss -Süd ( No. 24) and the junction Dormagen (No. 25) northwest of the city of Dormagen ( Lage51.11668546.7997587 ).

There were temperatures up to 1000 ° C; the smoke took the traffic on the bridge the view. There was a collision of six trucks and 15 passenger cars. The driver of a car was killed. 13 people injured, some of them seriously.

Because of suspected danger of collapse of the bridge, the A 57 was closed in both directions. The damaged bridge was demolished and replaced by two temporary bridges. The reopening of the A 57 on April 4, 2012. A permanent bridge is to be created in 2014.
