Buren R. Sherman

Buren Robinson Sherman ( born May 28, 1836 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York, † November 4, 1904 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and from 1882 to 1886 the 12th Governor of the state of Iowa.

Early years

Buren Sherman attended the local schools of his home in New York State. After that, he began an apprenticeship in jewelry and crafts. But he has not worked in this profession, instead he opted for a made ​​in 1855 moved to Iowa for a law degree. After his graduation and his 1859 was admitted to the bar he began in the town Vinton to work in his new profession. During the American Civil War he served in the Union Army, until he had to give up the military service in 1863 after an injury.

In 1865, Sherman district judge in Benton County. This office he held until 1866. Afterwards, he spent four years as secretary to the court. Between 1874 and 1881 he was auditor (state auditor) in Iowa.

Governor of Iowa

In 1881, Sherman was elected as the new governor of his state. He took up his new post on January 12, 1882. After a re-election in 1883, he could remain in office until January 14, 1886. During this time some new administrative departments were created in Iowa, including, among others, the Veterinary Services and the Employment Office. A Prohibition law was enacted and a tax reform carried out.

Another Journey

After his governorship Sherman retired from politics and devoted himself to his private interests. He was still active in a Masonic Lodge. Buren Sherman died in November 1904. He was buried in Vinton. Governor Sherman had two children with his wife Lenda Kendall.
