Benton County (Iowa)

The Benton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 26,076 inhabitants and a population density of 14.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Vinton.

History

The Benton County was formed on December 21, 1837 from parts of Dubuque County. It was named after Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858), the neighboring state of Missouri in the U.S. - representing Senate.

In the spring of 1846, a county seat was established, which was named North Port. Shortly afterwards, the town was renamed after General John C. Frémont in Fremont. Since there was already a town of the same name in Iowa, there was a further renaming. The still official name of the administrative seat is Vinton, named after the congressman Plynn Vinton of Ohio, who paid $ 50 for it.

1856, the foundation stone for the first ever used courthouse was laid. The present courthouse was built from 1905 to 1906.
