Carroll County (Iowa)

The Carroll County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 20,816 inhabitants and a population density of 14.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Carroll.

Geography

The County is located in west-central Iowa and flows through the north- east from the Raccoon River. It has an area of 1,477 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. At the Carroll County borders the following counties:

History

The Carroll County was formed on January 15, 1851 from parts of Pottawattamie County. It was named after the out of Carrollton, Maryland, originating Charles Carroll (1737-1832), the only Catholic and the longest living signer of the Declaration of Independence.

1855, the County Administration was established in Carrollton and in 1858 the first District Court built. 1869 was the more centrally located and with a railway connecting the Chicago and North Western Railroad provided Carroll City, Carroll today, the seat of the administration. The courthouse was completed in 1886 totally destroyed by fire. The present courthouse was built in 1965.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Carroll County 20,816 people in 8,614 households. The population density was 14.1 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 97.3 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.6 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 8,614 households lived statistically 2.27 per person.

24.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 56.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 18.6 percent were 65 years or older. 51.3 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 46,086. The per capita income was $ 24.468. 9.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
