Pocahontas County (Iowa)

The Pocahontas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 7,310 inhabitants and a population density of 4.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Pocahontas.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Iowa and has an area of 1,500 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. The northwest of the county is drained by the western source of the river Des Moines River. At the Pocahontas County borders the following counties:

History

The Pocahontas County was formed in 1851. It was named after the legendary Indian princess Pocahontas (c. 1595-1617 ), daughter of Chief Powhatan and wife of the Englishman John Rolfe.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Pocahontas County 7,310 people in 3,317 households. The population density was 4.9 people per square kilometer.
