Clinton County (Iowa)

The Clinton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In 2010, the County had 49 116 inhabitants and a population density of 27.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Clinton.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme east of Iowa; the border of the neighboring state of Illinois is the Mississippi River. The Clinton County has an area of 1839 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water surface. History

The Clinton County was founded on December 21, 1837 from former parts of Dubuque County and Wisconsin - formed territory.

It was named for DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828), a governor of New York and the strongest advocates of the Erie Canal. According to him the cities of De Witt and Clinton were named.
