Palo Alto County, Iowa

The Palo Alto County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 9,421 inhabitants and a population density of 6.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Emmetsburg, named after Robert Emmet, an Irish patriot.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Iowa and is from the western source river ( West Fork ) of the Des Moines River flows through.

In the midst of the county lies the Five Iceland Lake, an approximately three square kilometers large natural lake.

In the north, the boundary is to Minnesota about 35 miles away. The Palo Alto County has an area of 1,475 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Palo Alto County was formed on 15 January 1851 former parts of the Kossuth County. It was named after a battle in the Mexican-American War.

A special administration was established initially in 1858 in a small town called Paoli. 1859 the administrative and judicial buildings of its provision was passed.

In 1874 it was decided to create a new city. A year later, the new city Emmetsburg was ready to receive the County administration. 1880 a new courthouse was built. This was modified several times and the prison moved to another building. By 1977, the last extension was completed.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Palo Alto County 9,421 people in 3,979 households. The population density was 6.4 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 97.8 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.6 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 3,979 households lived statistically 2.24 per person.

22.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 56.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.3 percent were 65 years or older. 50.3 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 42,800. The per capita income was $ 23,071. 10.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
