Osceola County (Iowa)

The Osceola County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 6,462 inhabitants and a population density of 6.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sibley, named after General GH Sibley of Minnesota.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Iowa, bordered to the north Minnesota and has an area of 1,035 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Osceola County was formed in 1871 from parts of the former Woodbury County. It was named after a chief of the Seminole, Osceola.

It is because the smallest and youngest county in Iowa. In the same year came the first settlers, Captain Eldred Huff, and staked his claim. On January 1, 1872, the County Administration met for the first time. The first courthouse, constructed in timber, was built in November of the following year and also served as a meeting room, school and church.

In September 1903, the second courthouse was completed in October 1915 and supplied electricity.
