Cedar County (Iowa)

The Cedar County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 18,499 inhabitants and a population density of 12.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Tipton.

Geography

The County is located in eastern Iowa, is located in the southeast about 20 km from the Mississippi River and has an area of 1,507 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Cedar County was formed on December 21, 1837 from former parts of Dubuque County. It was named after the Cedar River.

1840, the city of Tipton, was founded today's administrative seat of the county.

Before the Civil War, the area around West Branch was an important base for the Underground Railroad, a network for the liberation of slaves from the southern states.

Former U.S. President Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) was born in West Branch in Cedar County.

Public institutions

The County has eight libraries with nearly 200,000 books together, over 8600 video and over 8900 audio documents. Furthermore, there are 6 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and five universities for a total of around 3350 students.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Cedar County 18,499 people in 7,558 households. The population density was 12.3 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 97.8 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.5 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 7,558 households lived statistically 2.36 per person.

24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.7 percent were 65 years or older. 50.5 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 52,600. The per capita income was $ 24,724. 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
