Castle in Leimental

Castle (French La Bourg ) is a facility located in Leimental municipality in the district of Laufen in the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland.

History

It is believed that the actual number of small castle had precursor. Proof coins found that the area was already inhabited in Roman times. 1168 Biedertan the castle as a fief was handed over to the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In 1269 it became the property of the Basel bishop. As of 1392, the Lords of Wessenberg were the vassals. After the 16th century the castle to " Biedertal " was renamed to " Burgtal " and finally to "castle". 1815 castle was assigned by decision of the Congress of Vienna, the canton of Bern and moved in 1994 to the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

Coat of arms

Since 1946 the castle has an official coat of arms. It is divided by a horizontal black bars in half. The upper area shows two, the lower portion of a red ball on a silver background. This is the coat of arms of the lords of Wessenberg in whose castle was owned by several centuries.

Personalities

  • Albert Hofmann, the discoverer of LSD, had his last residence in Burg im Leimental, where he died on 29 April 2008 at the age of 102 years.
