Button Island (Massachusetts)

Button Iceland is an island in the Hingham Bay in Boston Harbor. It is located 12.5 mi ( 20.1 km ) from Boston's city center on the territory of the State of Massachusetts in the United States. Button Iceland has a permanent area of approximately 0.61 acres (approx. 2,470 m²), the (0.46 km ²) is increased by one watt depending on tidal range temporarily by another 115 acres. It is administered by the city of Hingham and is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.

The island rises about 10 ft (3 m) from the water and consists mainly of glacial till.
Flora and Fauna
On button Iceland grows a very large oak tree that was planted there in the late 19th century. Besides thrive more smaller but still mature oaks and lime trees, cedars and Rhus. The occurring on the island include Myrica shrubs and scratch berries. In the intertidal zone different grasses and beach lilacs grow.
History
Very probably has already been used seasonally by the Indians the island. The original tree stands were probably removed by the colonists for use as firewood. Today you can find on the island around 20 trees and dense brambles in the undergrowth.
