Nixes Mate

Nixes Mate (also Nixes Iceland or Nick's Mate ) is an island in Boston Harbor. It is located 6.33 mi (10.2 km) from Boston city center on the territory of the State of Massachusetts in the United States. It is administered by the Coast Guard of the United States and is not accessible part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, but the public.

The marker on the island rises about 20 ft (6.1 m). At low tide rocks are visible around the island.

Flora and Fauna

Below the water surface grow various plants. The fauna of the island is still the subject of scientific studies.

History

The island served in the 17th century, mainly as a quarry for ship ballast; there slate was mined in the 18th century. 1636 Nixes Mate was transferred to John Gallop, who worked as a harbor pilot on Gallops Iceland and his sheep on the at that time still 12 acres ( 4.9 ha) island comprehensive Nixes Iceland could graze. 1726, the body of previously executed pirate William Fly was ( now Nick's Mate ) chained to the island and left to nature; two other pirates were buried there.

Attractions

The 1805 by the Boston Marine Society built on a granite foundation of wood, as a pyramid executed and unlit marker was under the number 04,000,189 on 18 March 2004 (but with construction date 1834) entered in the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, the history of the building is studied scientifically. It is coated with a layer of concrete and identifies the Nubble Channel, an important shipping route in the port area.
