The area Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area is a 520 -acre National Recreation Area, which consists of the islands in Boston Harbor and the waterfront a few islands in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. The reserve is managed by the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership, which includes the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the National Park Service among others, and is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston.
Most of the islands are open to the public, while some are very small and were abandoned to nature. Within the protected area is also the Boston Harbor Islands State Park, which is managed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 21 of the 34 islands are part of the Boston Harbor Islands Archeological District.
In the protected area there are trails and beaches, as can Georges Iceland on the Fort Warren on Little Brewster and Iceland with the Boston Light, the oldest lighthouse in the United States will be visited. Georges and Spectacle Iceland Iceland regularly move into the season of Boston and Quincy with ferries. Shuttle boats run at weekends and during the summer weekdays beyond other islands and the cities of Hull and Hingham on.
In 1996, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and MIT professor Clifford A. Goudey submitted a joint plan to revive the aquaculture and fish stocks in the Boston Harbor. To this end, they wanted to use, among other things, the old tanks and granite channels on Moon Iceland.

The two islands Castle and Spinnaker Iceland Iceland in Boston Harbor are not part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. Former islands such as Apple Iceland, Iceland Governors and Noddle 's Iceland were destroyed by the construction of East Boston and the expansion of Logan International Airport, before the reserve was reported.
Management
The Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area is managed by the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership, which was legally installed by the State. The members represent different -federal, state, municipal and non-profit organizations. Among them are:

In addition, the Boston Harbor Islands Advisory Council is a member of the partnership in order to provide recommendations for management of the park to the other partners. Overall, the panel of 13 people, each of whom shall appoint an alternate. While the representative of the Coast Guard shall be appointed by United States Secretary of Homeland Security, all other members are appointed by the United States Secretary of the Interior, after it has been agreed with the sending organization.
The everyday management of each island is the responsibility of the partners. This partnership ensures the entire reserve a high consistency and coordination.
The Boston Harbor Islands State Park
The Boston Harbor Islands State Park is a registered State Park in Massachusetts, and includes 13 islands in Boston Harbor. The park was established already in the 1970s by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management ( DEM) and is now part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, which was designated in 1996. Because of the unusual partnership arrangements within the Recreation Area State Park today exists as an administrative unit and is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation as the successor organization of the DEM. The headquarters of the park administration is located near the ferry terminal in Hingham.

Traffic
The ferries from Boston 's Best Cruises ( formerly Harbor Islands Express) offer connections from Long Wharf at Christopher Columbus Park to Georges and Spectacle Islands.
Under certain conditions, can create in compliance with specific constraints and private boats to the Islands Georges, Spectacle, Grape, Bumpkin, Lovells and Peddocks.
The islands Deer, Nut, Worlds End and Webb Memorial can be reached by road access from the mainland. While this is true in principle, to the accessible islands of Quincy from Moon and Long Iceland to, but these are not publicly available and can be shielded with access controls.
