Squantum Point Park

The area Squantum Point Park is a 50 acres ( 20 ha ) of large State Park in Quincy, Massachusetts in the United States. The park is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR ) and is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston. It was named after the peninsula in Quincy, on which the park area is located.

Description

The park is open year round from sunrise to sunset. From the park, the Boston skyline can be seen on the other side of Boston Harbor, and dozens of species of wild birds enliven the reserve. The park is located on the site of the former military airfield Naval Air Station Squantum, long of which today only a 2,700 ft ( 822.96 m) piece of runway left. Also there was until 1986, the shipyard Fore River Shipyard of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, in which the company destroyers built for the Navy.

The DCR has developed on the site of a riverside park, embracing both created a sanctuary for birds as also preserves the traces of flying past. The park was officially opened in June 2001 and is now a popular spot for bird watching as well as a vantage point on the harbor. The park can be reached by public transportation via the MBTA bus # 211 and the Red Line.
