Charles River Reservation Parkways

The Charles River Reservation Parkways are a group of parkways along the banks of the Charles River in the eastern part of the state of Massachusetts in the United States. The streets belong to the protected areas Charles River Reservation and Upper Charles River Reservation and extend over the territories of several towns and municipalities in the metropolitan region of Greater Boston. The road system is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR ) and is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston.

The Parkways extend from the Charles River Dam, where the Charles River flows into the Boston Harbor, to Riverdale Park in Boston's West Roxbury. Most of the roads have been included in their entirety on the National Register of Historic Places, but are the Storrow Drive and Memorial Drive already therefore excluded part of the Charles River Basin Historic District and were greeted by a double shot.

On the other hand, the streets of Harvard Square to Newton Upper Falls extend. The streets along the river banks were expanded in the early 20th century to allow for a continuous path through the park.

Eastern Part Of

The eastern section of the Parkway is located on the territory of the Charles River Reservation, extending from Harvard Square to the vicinity of Watertown Square in Watertown and Newton. Specifically, it involves the following streets:

  • Western Avenue / Arsenal Street, for a short distance between the Soldiers Field Road and the Greenough Boulevard
  • Charles River Road on the north shore in Watertown
  • Greenough Boulevard on the north shore from the end of Memorial Drive in Cambridge to Arsenal Street in Watertown
  • Leo Birmingham Parkway, a short distance further away from the shore, which opens at both ends in the Soldiers Field Road
  • Nonantum Road on the south bank of the end of Soldiers Field Road to Newton into
  • North Beacon Street, a short distance between the Greenough Boulevard and the Charles River Road
  • Soldiers Field Road from the end of Storrow Drive through Allston and Brighton to the North Beacon Street Bridge where it meets the Nonantum Road

Western Part

The western part of section is located in the protected area Upper Charles River Reservation and includes several, non-contiguous segments in Waltham, Weston and Newton. The section of the river lies between the Sawyer Road in Waltham and Massachusetts Route 9 near the intersection of I-95. The individual roads concerned are:

  • Charles River Road between the Sawyer Road and South Street in Waltham
  • Norumbega Road between South Street and Massachusetts Route 30 in Waltham
  • Quinobequin Road between Route 16 and Massachusetts Route 9 in Newton
  • Recreation Road between I-95 and Park Street in Weston
