The Mystic Valley Parkway in Arlington

The Mystic Valley Parkway is a parkway at the area of ​​the cities Arlington, Medford, Somerville and Winchester in the state of Massachusetts in the United States. The road is part of Massachusetts Route 16 and was recorded in 2006 in the National Register of Historic Places. The Parkway is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR ) and is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston.

Route

The road runs essentially from north to south and leads from the Middlesex Fells Reservation Reserve in Winchester through the valley of the River But Jonah and along the eastern shore of the Mystic Lakes to Medford. Thus, this section follows the old Middlesex Canal. After crossing the road together with the Massachusetts Route 60 the Mystic River. From there, the road runs along the winding river in east-west direction through Arlington.

A short stretch runs along the south shore of the Lower Mystic Lake, where Route 60 ends at an intersection with U.S. Highway 3 and the Massachusetts Route 2A. The Mystic Valley Parkway meets at a roundabout near the mouth of Alewife Brook in the Mystic River on the Alewife Brook Parkway and joins there as well with the Massachusetts Route 16 leads from there the route further downstream along the banks of the Mystic River, crossed it several times and finally ends at the Revere Beach Parkway, where both roads at the Massachusetts Route 28 meet.

History

The Parkway was designed, including the surrounding landscape in the years 1894 and 1895 for 1893 established in Boston Metropolitan Park District of the Olmsted Brothers, with Charles Eliot played a leading role. Originally the road was planned as one of many sections of the road network serving the streets for recreation and should also satisfy particularly high aesthetic demands.

Today, the Parkway is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston and was added on 18 January 2006 as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
