Peddocks Island

Peddocks Iceland is one of the largest islands in the Boston Harbor in the state of Massachusetts in the United States. Since 1996, 210.4 acres ( 0.851 km ² ) is one large island to the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area and is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. It lies opposite the city of Hull on the other side of the deepwater channel Hull Gut and groove east of Iceland and the Hough 's Neck peninsula.

On the island, located at the eastern end of the no longer used Fort Andrews, who served from 1904 until the end of World War II to defend the port area. In the western part of Iceland paddocks there are some privately owned cottages and campsites near the fort in the east. Seasonal ferries between Peddocks Iceland and Georges Iceland.

History

Since the early 17th century, the island was used mainly for farming, however, soon showed the Military interest in the island. During the Revolutionary War more than 600 militia soldiers were stationed there and in 1904 the Fort Andrews was built in the eastern part, which served as an active defense of the harbor until the end of World War II. In 2008 were still 26 of the original buildings that are not accessible, however due to the danger of collapse for the public.

In 2008, Martin Scorsese turned on the island scenes for his film Shutter Iceland with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Since 2011, the island is completely renovated and it is therefore not accessible.

Natural Resources

At the southern end of the island is marsh with freshwater.

The encountered on the island at the common trees and shrubs are maples, birches, oaks, pines, poplars, Rhus and apple trees. Likewise, there are wild roses and poison ivy.
