Massachusetts Port Authority

The Massachusetts Port Authority ( Massport short ) is an agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. It owns and operates the airports Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field and Worcester Regional Airport and various terminals in the Port of Boston. The Authority is funded through their current income itself, which amount to several billion dollars per year, so for their operation no tax dollars are spent. The headquarters of the Massport is located in the Logan Office Center just off the Logan Airport in Boston's South Boston. The Authority is independent, but sitting their board of directors of the incumbent Secretary of Transportation before, who heads the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Airports

In the property of the Authority airports include Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field, and since June 22, 2010, the Worcester Regional Airport, in the course of the implementation of a new law by the City of Worcester for a payment of more than 15 million U.S. dollars was transferred to the Massport.

Massport Shuttle

The Massport shuttle bus connects all terminals of Logan International Airport with the Airport MBTA station of the Blue Line, as well as the water taxi on Harborside Drive.

Logan Express

With the Logan Express bus can be reached from all terminals from the car park and ride parking in Braintree, Framingham, Woburn and Peabody.

Silverline

The Massport supports the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority financially in the operation of shuttle buses the Silver Line, connecting the city center with the terminals at Logan Airport. Furthermore, the Massport provides support for maintenance of the Station Airport and the ventilation of the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Other services

Because of federal legislation in Massachusetts municipal police such as the Boston Police Department has no powers on the grounds of Massport. Instead, police protection on the Massachusetts State Police and by the Massport Police is guaranteed.

History

The Authority was established in 1956 and replaces the former used for these tasks Port Commission from. In 1966 the Castle Iceland container terminal for the Sea-Land Corporation was established, which was one of the first container terminals. 1971 was the Massport in Charlestown build a second container terminal to allow other companies to container handling. Then, in 1980 the Castle Iceland container terminal was expanded and also open for other companies.

On January 1, 2010 Ownership and responsibility in the Tobin Bridge from Massport on the 2009 newly created Massachusetts Department of Transportation has been transferred.
