California Shenandoah Valley AVA

California Shenandoah Valley AVA ( recognized since 28 December 1982) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of California. The area is located in the administrative regions Amador County, El Dorado County, east of Sacramento. The vineyard is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, south of the El Dorado AVA.

First vineyards were created during the California Gold Rush in 1848. In the 1970s, the famous winery Sutter Home Winery began bottling of Zinfandel from California Shenandoah Valley grapes. In addition to the Syrah Zinfandel is the most important grape variety.

In the state of Virginia, there is also a wine region with the name Shenandoah Valley AVA.
