Camon, Ariège

Camon is a commune of 165 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ariège in the Midi-Pyrénées region.

Camon is classified as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

Geography

Encircled by a meander of the Hers, Camon is the most easterly part of the Midi -Pyrenees region and thus delimits to the adjacent part of the country Languedoc -Roussillon. The climate is both of the nearby mountains (Pyrenees), as influenced by the Mediterranean.

History

According to unconfirmed tradition Charles the Great had in 778 here in the valley of the River Hers a Benedictine monastery founded. Has been handed down in writing that a stone building was erected by monks of the monastery of Lagrasse in the year 923.
