Canadice (grape)

Canadice is a in 1954 newly bred red grape variety with seedless berries. It is a cross between Bath and grape variety Himrod. This is a complex culture in the genes of Vitis labrusca and wild vines Vitis vinifera are available. As a breeder Robert M. Pool is specified. The selection of suitable seedlings was carried out in 1962. Since 1977 Canadice is released for commercial cultivation.

The new variety was developed at Cornell University in Geneva ( the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology and Viticulture, so the vines breeding Institute in upstate New York). The university is located at the southern end of Cayuga Lake. Is named the variety after Canadice Lake, one of the lakes in the Finger Lakes.

The grape variety is used mostly as Hausrebe or as locally marketed table grape with its benefits the relatively low proportion of acid. Due to their high profitability, the wines come mostly thin and are of moderate quality. Smaller stocks are in New York ( → Viticulture in New York), Oregon (→ Viticulture in Oregon ) and Canada known.

Synonym: the breeding stock number 45625 or NY NEW YORK 45625, Canadice Seedless.

Ethnicity: Bath x Himrod.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The drum-shaped bunch is medium ( the weight of about 15 cm long grape is on average 240 gr) and dichtbeerig. The spherical berries are medium in size ( an average of 1.6 gr difficult) and of red color. The berries have the characteristic but less pronounced Fox - tone of wild grape Vitis labrusca. Due to the thick grape skins the variety suitable for the transportation and several weeks of storage is suitable.

The early sprouting grape ripens almost simultaneously with the Chasselas and is thus within the red grapes very early maturing, so that they can mature in cool locations. The variety is susceptible to black rot and downy mildew of the vine. A better resistance has the variety to powdery mildew. In addition, the variety is moderately vigorous but very profitable. With strong yield reduction the variety has a very good winter hardiness. Strong damage occur only at temperatures below -20 ° C. It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic drawback is avoided, no return delivered to male plants need to grow.
